Homeless Persons' Memorial Day

5-8PM on December 21st at the Chief David Salmon Tribal Hall (111 Clay St.), join us for a shared meal, eulogy & community speakers honoring the lives of Alaskans who have died while unhoused. Contribute the names & memories of your loved ones to the memorial board & learn about local resources. Fairbanks’ first Homeless Persons' Memorial Day is part of a national commemoration, held annually, on the shortest day of the year, in hundreds of communities across the nation. On average, life span in the U.S. is 78. However, people who experience long-term homelessness have a life expectancy of just 50 years. The Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day focuses attention on those lost, makes space for community grief and offers an opportunity to commit to preventing further unnecessary deaths of our unhoused neighbors. In Fairbanks, our extreme weather and scarce housing opportunities put already marginalized people in further danger every day. By raising public awareness about homelessness in our community and sharing information on proven solutions, we can build better & safer community together through Recognition, Hope and Healing.
