Assistant Borough Attorney (3 positions)
Utquiagvik (Barrow), or Anchorage, AK (on-site)
Utquiagvik $4,775-$6,887 DOE bi-weekly.
Anchorage $5,000-$5,410 DOE bi-weekly

Your day-to-day, broadly speaking: In this role, you will represent the Borough in reviewing, approving, and negotiating contracts and handling a wide range of legal matters. You’ll provide advice and counsel to Borough officials and employees, applying your expertise in areas such as administrative, contract, tort, personnel, environmental, regulatory, and other fields of municipal law.
You’ll manage assigned legal issues from start to finish—conferring with participants, negotiating agreements, conducting research, and preparing the legal documents, analyses, and arguments needed to support the Borough’s position.
Your work will also include reviewing decisions, policies, and regulations; drafting resolutions and ordinances for the Mayor to present to the Assembly; and representing the Borough in hearings and before Hearing Boards, where you’ll examine witnesses and argue cases based on facts, statutes, and precedent.
The role also involves staying current on trends in legal issues and civil justice. For Anchorage-based positions, periodic onsite rotations at the Utqiagvik headquarters are required.
What we’re looking for:
- Juris Doctor degree
- Licensed by the Bar to practice law in Alaska, and remain active with all Alaska Bar annual requirements, OR be eligible to take the Bar within 6 months of hire
- Knowledge of Borough policies and procedures
- Knowledge of State of Alaska statutes, rules, administrative orders, policies and procedures, applicable Federal rules and regulations
- Knowledge of legal research methods, techniques, sources, databases, and other research tools
- Knowledge of the principles and protocols for the evidentiary gathering of information, documents, financial records, and other data that may be used in court and legal hearings
- Skill in researching and identifying precedent in case law
- Skill in negotiating contracts and agreements
- Skill in reviewing and assessing legal issues and documents
- Skill in utilizing and evaluating electronic legal research and online systems.
